"My name is Juan. I am 37 years old and live with my wife and 3 teenage children in a cement block house. The roof is in bad shape. After a storm in 1985, we patched it up but now it leaks water again and it is too expensive to repair properly. I work on the Jose Marti Fruit farm co-operative, where I have an area in which I cultivate oranges and grapefruit."

The Cuban citrus fruit in Fruit Passion carries the Fairtrade Mark which guarantees farmers a minimum price and an additional 'premium' payment. The premium is used for projects that benefit the co-operatives - such as better machinery, vehicles, irrigation systems etc. or to finance other activities of the co-operatives, including cultural and recreational facilities.

Traidcraft's role is to visit the farmer co-ops and work with them to maximise the impact of the fair trade premium. In other words, we help people to make good decisions about using quite large sums of money in ways that truly benefit the whole community.
